Xavien Howard Announces Retirement from NFL, Citing Faith and Family

Veteran cornerback Xavien Howard has announced his retirement from the NFL just days after playing a full game for the Indianapolis Colts.

The 32-year-old logged 66 defensive snaps in the team’s Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and had started all four games for the Colts this season.

Howard, a four-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFL interceptions leader, signed a one-year deal with Indianapolis in August worth up to $5 million.

After sitting out the entire 2024 season, he made a surprising return to the field this year, joining a Colts team that currently holds a 3-1 record. Prior to his brief stint in Indianapolis, Howard spent eight standout seasons with the Miami Dolphins, earning two All-Pro honors and establishing himself as one of the league’s premier defensive backs.

In a heartfelt message posted to Instagram, Howard explained that his decision to step away from the game was deeply rooted in his faith and family.

He reflected on the time he spent away from football in 2024, which allowed him to be more present in his children’s lives taking them to school, attending activities, and simply watching them grow. That experience, he said, shifted his priorities.

“I’ve always played for the love of the game,” Howard wrote. “But when I stepped away, I found something even more meaningful time with my kids. I’ve always put football first. I’m no longer willing to do that.”

Howard credited his faith as the guiding force behind his decision: “God doesn’t make mistakes. He’s led me to this moment.”

Though his career is ending in an unconventional way, Howard expressed peace with the decision, saying, “My purpose in this sport has been fulfilled. Now it’s time to put my family first and I’m proud of that.”
