Newcastle United were told they were idiots for spending so much money on Nick Woltemade.
He became Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever in August, arriving from Stuttgart for £69million.
There has been a lot of chat in Germany about the fee that the Magpies paid for Nick Woltemade, especially from people within Bayern Munich.
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge was the latest to weigh in, with the Bayern Munich board member saying that Stuttgart had found an ‘idiot’ to pay that much money for the 23-year-old.
It was extremely harsh, with Joelinton defending Nick Woltemade ahead of the striker netting his third Toon goal in the Champions League win over Union Saint-Gilloise.
The forward proves to be worth every penny with his performances, while Newcastle United are not concerned about the outside noise.
Bayern Munich chief’s Nick Woltemade comments lost in translation
That is according to transfer expert Graeme Bailey, who has exclusively spoken to Geordie Boot Boys about Rummenigge’s comments on Woltemade.
Bailey has been told by sources in Germany that the quotes have been slightly lost in translation, not that Newcastle United are too bothered.
“From speaking to German sources, I think it has been slightly misconstrued to a certain degree,” he said.
“German sources have told me they were calling the fee stupid, rather than Newcastle United themselves. That was the inclination.
“Newcastle probably did overpay on Woltemade, but not to the point that it was stupid. But it was stupid money for Bayern, which is why they didn’t do it.
“I don’t think Newcastle were too put out by the comments. It’s water off a duck’s back to them.”
Newcastle United taken aback by Nick Woltemade
Woltemade is doing his talking on the pitch, having produced his best Toon performance on Wednesday night. He was outstanding against USG, with Woltemade holding the ball up and bringing his teammates into the game.
The Germany international has hit the ground running in black and white, which has slightly surprised people within the club according to Bailey.
“I am told that Newcastle are pleasantly surprised by how ready he was and the fact they’ve been able to use him straight away,” he added.
“They are not surprised by how good he is, they knew what they were buying.”
